Scott Griffiths, Founder/CEO and Ron Love, Founder/President, opened Orange County’s first 18/8 at Westpark Plaza in Irvine four years ago. Scott is a seasoned entrepreneur and a member of Tech Coast Angels who has pioneered numerous start-ups and early stage companies. Ron is former President of Jose Eber and partner in the 33-salon chain Carlton International.

According to Love, “In many ways, we are the reinvention of the barber shop, or what the barber shop should have become. A place where men feel at ease to engage in conversation but also feel like they are in a well-designed, energetic environment. Women’s salons have been successful in delivering an experience to the female clientele, but quite frankly men are an afterthought when attending to the specialty hair services and grooming needs of men.”

“We’ve also added the MedSpa to increase our service offerings for men, and also for women. Over 50% of our male customers are referred by women, so we decided to give them a way to share in the 18/8 experience. We’ve added a separate entrance to the MedSpa to maintain the ‘sanctuary’ of the salon space for men.”

Stylists at 18/8 average more than 10 years of experience and are trained to provide expert consultation and services for the unique requirements of men. They have studied with companies including Sassoon, Schwarzkopf and American Crew and have traveled extensively to gain global knowledge to provide their clients with the best advice for hair and skincare services and products.

All services are provided in an upscale classic-contemporary semi-private environment. Hair services include Classic Cuts, starting at $30 and Executive Styles that include hot towel treatments and head/neck/and shoulder massages for $35. Grooming Solutions, designed for the busy executive and discerning man, include face (SkinMetics™), scalp (ScalpMetics™), and hand (MANicure). Special grooming packages focus on colouring and solutions for thinning hair including consultations and knowledgeable advice on hair restoration.

The 18/8 Centre also offers appointments with choice of stylist; exclusive memberships, gift certificates, and grooming packages; services provided at stylist stations in semi-privacy; a broad selection of hair and grooming products designed exclusively for men, business/sports/lifestyle publications; and coffee/tea service. Grooming packages range in price from $60 for basic packages to $150 for the Boardroom and the St. Andrews. The Company has recently added White Science teeth whitening services, and a MedSpa to cater to both men and women. According to Love, “More than half our men are referred by women…we want as many women exposed to 18/8 as possible.”

The 18/8 name goes back to 1913 in Sheffield, England, when Harry Brearly discovered that adding 18% chromium and 8% nickel to steel eliminated the tendency for it to oxidize and rust.
