Four high school seniors have each received $15,000 in scholarship funds after being named finalists in The Irvine Company’s 2008 Investing in Education Student Leadership Awards Program.

The company’s annual Student Leadership Awards program provides a total of $220,000 in scholarship funds to 32 high school students in districts that serve The Irvine Ranch who best demonstrate the qualities necessary to become future community leaders.

After completing a leadership exercise, a written essay and two oral interviews with community leaders, four finalists were selected to receive the final prize, with each finalist receiving a total of $15,000 in scholarship funds for the 2008 awards program.

This year’s finalists are: Rochelle Breedon, Tustin High School; James Lozano, Jr, Beckman High School; Aimee Jaquelyn Torres, Canyon High School; and Noah Young, Woodbridge High School.

The finalists were selected from the 32 students nominated by their participating high school for this year’s Student Leadership program. To be eligible for the awards, the students were required to have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and be a college-bound senior from one of the 16 participating high schools in the Irvine, Laguna Beach, Newport-Mesa, Tustin and Orange school districts. By being selected to participate in the awards program, each of the 32 Student Leaders received $5,000 in scholarship funds from The Irvine Company. These funds can be used for tuition, books, fees or other expenses associated with college.

Through a competitive program comprised of a leadership exercise, a written essay and an oral interview, eight semifinalists were selected from among the 32 students by a panel of community leaders. The eight semifinalists received an additional $5,000 in scholarship funds, bringing their total award to $10,000. They participated in an additional interview session with a panel of different community leaders on April 18. Four students were then selected as finalists, with each receiving an additional $5,000 in scholarship funds, bringing their total award to $15,000.

All 32 Student Leadership Award winners will be honored at the annual awards reception on May 14 at the Island Hotel, Newport Beach.

The Irvine Company has sponsored the Student Leadership Awards program for 22 years; since its inception, the program has awarded more than $4 million in scholarship funds to more than 680 students. The Irvine Company grants these scholarship awards based on a number of leadership criteria, including: community service, extracurricular activities, academic achievement and other accomplishments or qualities that demonstrate a student’s potential to be an outstanding future leader.
